Tomorrow Never Knows
237. “Tomorrow Never Knows” is a song by The Beatles that was written by John Lennon and Paul McCartney. It was the first song recorded for the Revolver album and the last song included on the album. Revolver is considered one of The Beatles breakthrough albums. After recording Rubber Soul – another breakthrough album, “Tomorrow Never Knows” set a tone for Revolver. It is The Beatles dive into psychedelic music. It was inspired by the Timothy Leary and Richard Alpert's book The Psychedelic Experience: A Manual Based On The Tibetan Book Of The Dead. The lines from the song, “Turn off your mind / Relax and float downstream / It is not dying” are a fairly directed lift from the Tibetan book,“"Whenever in doubt, turn off your mind, relax, float downstream." The Beatles producer, George Martin, allowed each member to create a strange sound which were then mixed, often backward and played at different speeds. It’s per psychedelia.
