Payola
237. “Payola” is a song by Jesse Welles. The song is critical of the way the music industry treats its artists. It has a similar theme to: Bob Dylan’s “Maggie’s Farm’, Heart’s “Barracuda”, and Pink Floyd’s “Welcome to the Machine”. The term “payola” was first used in the late 1950’s to describe the “pay to play” practice used by disk jockey’s including Dick Clark and Alan Freed. The practice nearly led to the “day the music died”, as the songs that were getting airplay were songs whose promoters could pay monetarily or offer DJs songwriting credits.
