The Times They Are A Changin’
14. The period identified as “The Sixties”, began with the assignation of John F. Kennedy and end with the resignation of Richard Nixon. “The Times They Are A Chagin’” which was written in 1963, shortly after the President’s assignation, and became an anthem for American youth. The song is a call to action and delivers a message to those who choose to stand in the way of change, “Please get out of the new one / If you can't lend your hand / For the times they are a-changin'.” For this illustration, I chose to focus on the third stanza, “Come senators, congressmen / Please heed the call / Don't stand in the doorway / Don't block up the hall / For he that gets hurt / Will be he who has stalled / The battle outside ragin' / Will soon shake your windows / And rattle your walls / For the times they are a-changin'.” The sixties defined the Baby Boom generation -- its apex was 1968. I think that for today’s youth, the year 2020 will define who they are. The song’s message remains as poignant today as it did when it was written. Today, congress seems as distant from our collective needs as it did then.
