Space Captain

15. The illustration for “Space Captain” was inspired by the performance of Joe Cocker and Leon Russell as part of the Mad Dogs and Englishmen tour. The song lyrics are by Matthew Moore. The lesson of this song comes from the repetitive message that we need to “learn to live together”. The “we” can be seen as “all of us”, regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation, country of origin. The repetitive lines can also be seen as our need to become one with the planet, “Once I was traveling across the sky / This lovely planet caught my eye / And being curious I flew close by / And now I'm caught here till I die.” Sadly, it doesn’t appear that we’re much closer to learning to live together (with each other or the planet) than we were in 1970 when the song was recorded.
