234.“Wipeout” is an instrumental (except for the shout “Wipeout”) that was written and first performed by The Safaris. Along with The Beach Boys, Dick Dale, and the Ventures, The Safaris help to define Surf music. A subgenre of rock and roll that is associated with Southern California, surfing, fast cars and is characterized by reverb-heavy electric guitar and/or vocal harmonies. What makes “Wipeout” unique is its dominating drum riff. I loved it when my local drummer friends would play that riff. (Shoutout to Buz King and Bobby Olive)
