Over The Rainbow
226. “Over The Rainbow” was by Harold Alen with lyrics by Yip Harburg for the 1939 movie “The Wizard of Oz. The lyrics were intended to express hope that President Franklin Roosevelt’s “New Deal” would get America out of the depression. The song is sung in the film by Judy Garland, as Dorthy, who is looking for an adventure beyond what she finds in Kansas, but who later finds out “There’s no place like home.” In a 2001 poll conducted by the Recording Industry Association of America and the National Endowment for the Arts, "Over The Rainbow" was voted the #1 song of all time. It has been covered by, well, almost everybody including Liza Minnelli (Judy Garland’s daughter), Eric Clapton, Ray Charles, and Hawaiian ukulele musician Israel Kamakawiwo’ole.
