Hound Dog
31. “Hound Dog” was written by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller
Although the song is generally associated with Elvis Presley’s 1958 recording, it was originally written for a woman, and originally recorded by Willie Mae “Big Mama” Thornton in 1953. Like many blues songs, the lyrics present a double entendre. While it seems, they refer to a good-for-nothing hound dog, the dog in this song is a metaphor for the woman’s good-for-nothing man.
