Gimme Some Truth

249. As we sink deeper into the political quagmire surrounding Donald Trump, it is worth asking how the country reached this point — and how so many Americans failed to see it coming. One place to begin is with Trump’s apparent belief that if a falsehood is repeated often enough, people will eventually accept it as truth. That principle, commonly associated with Nazi propagandist Joseph Goebbels, remains one of the most dangerous tools in modern politics.

John Lennon captured this frustration more than fifty years ago in his 1971 song “Gimme Some Truth,” from the album Imagine. Lennon, who was labeled a radical and targeted for his outspoken political views, used the song to condemn politicians he viewed as deceptive, manipulative, and cowardly. His message was simple: people deserve honesty from those in power.

More than half a century later, that demand feels more urgent than ever.

The American people deserve leaders who respect facts, value truth, and understand that democracy cannot survive when lies are repeated often enough to become accepted as reality.

It is time once again to demand of our political leaders: Give us some truth.
